This week's New Year's festivities included, but were not limited to, the following:
1) Attending a New Year's Eve celebration at the Futemna Cave Shrine...

McCall Displaying her Fortune
Beginning the New Year by buying a fortune for about a dollar and tying it to a rope in the shrine ensures that the fortune will come to fulfillment.

Bad Fortunes
Jason and Holly both initially purchased bad fortunes. Holly's was actually really bad and even mentioned something about being tossed about like a small vessel in a tempest. Fortunately, if you don't like your fortune, you can keep buying new ones until you receive one you can live with. Twenty-seven dollars later (Stewart Exaggeration), Holly and I finally received a fortune that did not involve the deaths of any of our children.

Denver Sealing the Deal
Denver's not quite as picky as us and he tied on the first fortune he bought.
After buying our fortunes at the Hindu shrine, we went next door to ring in the New Year at a Buddhist temple (click above for some exciting footage).
2) Visiting Shuri Castle on New Year's Day...

Shuri Castle was originally built in the 14th century and served as the palace of the Ryukyu Kingdom. It was burned down and rebuilt several times over the centuries. During the WWII Battle of Okinawa it was completely destroyed and was rebuilt in 1992. For those with an appetite to learn more see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shuri_Castle.
3) Constructing a Super-Mega-Sized Fort in the Living Room...

It's amazing what you can make with only a piano, a sofa, a kitchen table, two chairs, two end tables, 12 blankets and 175 feet of rope.
4) Saturday Park Exploration with the Pinnau Family...
First Park of the Day
Denver and Josh just couldn't get enough of the roller slides at this park in Naha.
Supermarket LunchOne feature of most Japanese supermarkets is that they have a section of the store where you can buy ready-to-eat and ready-to-heat-up Japanese food. After you buy the food, you can then use a microwave conveniently located by the cash register to customize the eating temperature of your selected entree.

Jason Saves the Day - Sort Of
A mom and her son were flying a kite which then became stuck in this tree. Being the nice guy Jason is, he went and grabbed Denver to climb the tree and retrieve the kite. After Denver fell out of the tree during his kite-rescue attempt, Jason decided it was time to perform the rescue himself (pictured above). After retrieving the kite, he tried to return the kite to the mom and son. They were very reluctant and kept trying to give us the kite. However, in the end they agreed to take the kite back. Unfortunately, our act of service has a bad ending. About 15 minutes later, a mom and son showed up at the park with an expandable stick to retrieve the kite. They were quite confused when they couldn't find the kite in the tree. Jason then realized that he had given the kite away to some other bystanders. The actual owners of the kite must have left why he was fetching Denver. He should have given heed to Tina Turner's words: "We don't need another hero."
Second Park of the Day
After lunch we found another fun park in Naha. Denver enjoyed this exciting zip line over the pond of flesh eating carp.
